Wardrobe Staple No 2 of 33: The Little Black Dress

The little black dress is an icon. There is an inherit sexiness affiliated with the black dress and it’s no wonder that the most glamorous women in history have favored them! Worn by Coco Chanel, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, the little black dress is important in a woman’s timeless collection of clothing. I recommend going for a knee length hem (or slightly lower or higher) but avoid too long. Midi lengths in black tend to feel like an awkwardly chopped gown. Look for a substantial stretch fabric for figure hugging sexiness or a light fabric if the style you choose is more of a fit and flare. Think of lifetime ownership and avoid trendy silhouettes, over complicated straps and cutouts. A classic Little Black Dress looks like it could be worn in any era for that past 70 years. Shop Bop has a nice selection of Little Black Dresses for a budget shopper, and Net A Porter has great designer options. Also click the pick of Marilyn above for Saks current LBD selection!
