Wardrobe Staple no 13 of 33: The Mini Skirt

The beloved mini, a piece of clothing showing of rebellion through the years. The mini skirt dates all of the way back to Egyptian times and became popular again in the 1920’s as hemlines rose. In the 60’s, the mini skirt became a symbol for women’s freedom. I adore miniskirts and currently have three in my closet, two in leather, one in silk. Mini’s also are running rampant with the 90’s trend and all of the references to Alicia Silverstone in Clueless. If you want to be trend, go for a plaid and maybe a pleat! If you want to be timeless, look for black leather, solid colors that match the rest of your closet or a floral/animal print, which I consider classics. I think the most flattering shape has a slight or dramatic A-line. The pencil shape in a mini tends to feel too restrictive, slutty in an 80’s trashy way and more likely to show your belly not so nicely. If you have a great longer A-line skirt that may hit at a funny (read: unflattering) length, consider chopping into a mini via your local tailor. Mini lengths are completely subjective, and it is really up to your comfort level. I like to use my finger tips as a guide. Hold your hands straight down to your sides, and wherever your middle finger hits is a great mini length to start. If you want to go shorter, from there, awesome, just remember to use the sit test to see if your knickers show.

Maje Paris makes super French inspired mini skirts, they made the leather skirt in my staples reel on instagram. Aritizia made some lovely vegan leather mini skirts and also has some great high waisted minis for a good price. Net-a-Porter, FarFetch and Ssense are my go to’s for designer options for my clients, including Alaia and Versace among others. Realisation is my favorite for a printed silk mini.
