The Sweater Vest

When I think sweater vest, two different references come to my mind… One: Cher in Clueless and of course, one of my all time favorite movies. Two: Isabel Marant doing her fabulous rehashes of classic 80’s and 90’s sexy girl silhouettes. in my opinion, Marant kinda rules the V shape in clothing, and to me the sweater vest is one of the best ways to get that V shape going. I like it exaggerated with an oversized fit and a cinched in waist. If oversized isn’t your thing, then look for cropped or mini versions of the beloved sweater vest, more in the vibe of Cher in Clueless. Sweater vests are a great way to ward of jackets or coats for a few more weeks in the fall and provide extra warmth as an additional layer once the cold weather sets in. Since you will most likely be wearing your sweater vest layered over a tee, sweatshirt or button down, the fabric content isn’t as important as a scarf or a regular sweater. Although I always prefer cashmere over any other wool or fake alternative because of it’s light weight factor, softness and warmth.

My first choice for knits is always The Elder Statesman. Their sweater vest is fun and whacky, like a majority of their collection. Maison Margiela did some fab oversized sweater vests this season. Ganni produced sweater vest of recycled knit. For chicer than chic sweater vests, look no further than The Row. Saks Fifth Ave has a great selection of every variety of sweater vests with a good price range. Free People & PacSun have great options for those who may be more budget conscious.
