The Cardigan
So many cardigan options out there, it’s hard to pick just one for the wardrobe! Cardigans can easily work for you year round, especially a light weight number that layers nicely over floral dresses in the summer and over a button down shirt and under a jacket in the winter. I recommend having at least one oversized cardigan and one cropped or fitted cardigan in your closet. Knits are another place I recommend investing in cashmere and more luxury brands. I have cashmere pieces from 2012 that still look as good as new. Personal style is the main consideration when choosing the perfect cardigan for you, what colors do you love to wear? Are you more of a 90’s grunge babe, a 00’s minimalist or a 50’s bombshell? These questions should help you find your perfect cardigan. When buying a cardigan, I recommend staying away from the long, rick owens knock off kinda shawl cardigans, the type of cardigan with a skinny arm and large rectangular body that hangs with lots of fabric in front. They look cheap and dated to me, as well as looking like the cardigan equivalent of a muumuu, and not in a good way. Stop hiding your body under loads of fabric. I would rather you wear a Grandpa Cardigan than this generic shape that is so common in outfits with generic, un considered style.
The only cardigan currently in my closet is the Italy Smoking Jacket from The Elder Statesman. I have had this cardigan for 10 years and it’s still as amazing as the day I picked it up! I think The Elder Statesman is the cream of the crop for cashmere in general, if you have the budget to invest, go here. Currently I have been looking at the cardigans at Khaite for more of a cropped cardigan vibe. I love these knits and Khaite is one of the chicest brands in the world right now. Gentle Herd is a new comer to the knitwear seen and I like their simplicity and elegance. I like their options of different wools and materials, shapes and lengths, just be careful to avoid that long shapeless vibe here. Free People has all shapes, sizes, colors and materials available at all price points. I have a few of their cashmere items and still love them a few years after purchasing. Everlane has chic cardigans in the world of Phoebe Philo/Bottega Veneta lite, and I also own several of their knits for years now. They are very friendly on the budget. Victor Glemaud is doing incredible knits, including Curve sizing, and his cardigans are always super cute. Naked Cashmere is great for basics, high quality, and decent pricing. And if you want that cool French girl vibe, look no further than Rouje. They have the best fem prints and shapes.
