Wardrobe Staple no 18 of 33: The Trouser
The essential trouser is an absolute must in any wardrobe, male or female. You need at least one great designer trouser outside of your suit. I believe this is a place to put your money and invest in a good pair of trousers that will last you a life time. Good tailoring, nice fabric and quality sewing are all important when choosing a trouser. Find a silhouette that compliments both your style and body. Is it high-waisted with a great pleat? or is it more of a cigarette Audrey Hepburn shape? What about a cropped wide leg with a small cuff? I love all of these options, as you dial in your style, a shape will call to you! Be sure you buy your trousers in a comfortable size. I always buy mine a little big so I can wear them low on my hips with super high heels, or high on my waist with a belt and some flat shoes. This way I also have room to fluctuate in size and weight, which I do from season to season unfortunately. Once you have your trousers, be sure to take them to a good tailor to adjust the length to the shoe height you will be wearing them with the most.
Many of my trousers are Phoebe Philo’s Celine. There is a huge market for her clothing from the Celine Era, see The Real Real for some good options! I also love Nicholas Ghesquire’s cut of a trouser! He’s now at Louis Vuitton but it’s worth looking on The Real Real for his old work at Balenciaga. If you are on a budget, look no further than Frankie Shop! They’re tailoring is heaven at a great price! I am in love with Raf Simons trouser at the moment, don’t be afraid of the menswear for a good trouser! Everlane is another great budget option, the pleat pant is very chic and affordable. I also love a Comme Des Garcon drop crotch trouser, so comfy and chic.
