Wardrobe Staple no 17 of 33: The Cami
The underwear that has really gone mainstream, the camisole is a really core basic I recommend every woman to have in their closet. The cami adds skin when needed under tailoring, heavy winter jackets and as summer temps rise too high for a shirt. I love camis under a suit and with any style of skirt or short. The style can be traced back to victorian undergarments, but I love using it as a bit of a grunge reference when thrift store camisoles resurfaced in my teen years. I have a plain cami in my wardrobe at the moment, and plan to add a lacey version for variety. Go for colors that make your skin pop or glow, or stick the the neutrals like nude colors, ivory, white, black, navy. If you have a bigger bust, try a strapless bra underneath, or find a cami with underwire cups.
My current cami is from Everlane and it’s basic-ness is it’s beauty. I love the lingerie vibes of this Saint Laurent cami. Net-a-porter has a fantastic selection of camisoles that double as tops or underwear. As long as it’s not sheer, I say it works as a top. If it is sheer, than just add a cute bra. Silk Laundry has an amazing selection of camis in all shapes, colors and prints. Cami NYC will be my go to when I am ready to add a lacy cami to my closet. The Ana from Realisation Par is a lovely 70’s/90’s take on the cami! Nili Lotan’s cami is ultra classic. And I always love all of the camis from Agent Provocateur!
